A feeling from which no life is free of. The more time passes, the more it piles up. How many times do we look back and wish that the chance may be granted to tell our foolish past not to commit that silly mistake, not to say that word which hurt the person so dear to us, not to take that path that ruined our best of chances in life. It is constant companion, always lurking in shadows, reminding us of our foolishness and what bloody mistakes we committed. Did you ever wonder how different our lives would be if we had no regrets in life, it might be a little less burdensome, a little easier and a lot more brighter. It is not possible to live without mistakes in this world, after all it is a proof of us being humans. But when did this reality stopped us from playing the torturous game of ‘what if’. What if I had not said that, what if I hadn’t done that. Is it not the truth that the more we move on in life the more we look back, at the good times, forever frozen in eternity, sitting perfectly in our past, making us wish the present was like that and of course, the bad times that make us want to relive that one instant and undo the wrong.
I have them, the moments that I wish never existed, moments I wish someone else had lived in my place, moments I wish could be erased forever. Looking back, I will give anything not to see that look of hurt on the faces I so cherish. The only comfort in this is that I know that everybody has them. Regrets.
They will always be there and what’s worse they will increase as times go by. Future holds them more, awaiting us to make one wrong move. Regret does make cowards of us as well. We all have the chances we didn’t take because a mistake from past warned us that we might be committing the same mistake again. The only way not to let regret get to us is to live our present to the fullest. If you think that you are going to look back and wish I have done something right this instant, do it. In words of Groucho Marx:
“Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.”
We don’t know what awaits us, let us not waste the present looking back at past or worrying about the future. If there is something that needs to be said, say it, if there is something that needs to be done, do it. It is better to take the chance and feel sorry about it than feeling sorry about never taking the chance. At the end you are the one who is going to take the step for yourself, no one else will do it for you. Don’t deprive yourself of wonders of this instant that is beautiful just because you happen to exist in it. It is a gift, every instant that we breathe, every moment we share with others, every second we live. Gifts are meant to be cherished, so cherish it while you can, with people you love. That is after all, not a bad way to live.
