Germany has got its first female Defense Minister. Doctor of Medicine Ursula von der Leyen is moving to the post from her previous job as Labor Minister. She is replacing Thomas de Maiziere, who becomes Interior Minister.
They are part of a 15-member ‘grand coalition’ Cabinet line-up unveiled by Chancellor Angela Merkel Sunday.
The Social Democrats got six Cabinet seats, the Social Christian Union, three, and Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party, which is allied to the Union, six, including the special duties minister who heads the Chancellery.
The Social Democrats in the new Cabinet include Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who gets the foreign affairs portfolio, and SPD President Sigmar Gabriel, who gets the economics and energy portfolio. He also becomes Vice Chancellor.
