For most of us, an off-the-shelf laptop is sufficient for our needs, where power outlets and WiFi are easy to come by, and a dry and clean environment is the norm.

But if you’re one of those hardy souls that needs to take their computing power with them, way beyond the grid and in harsh conditions, a standard laptop would die a quick and painful death, just from the limited power supply alone, never mind the bumps and jiggles and grit and dust that it might be subjected to.

However, it looks like a solution for you is on its way, as what’s being called an “all-terrain off-road sport utility laptop”, the SOL, is in the works from WeWi.

The SOL is said to be extremely energy efficient, ruggedly built, and capable of operating in remote and harsh environments. The units are built on UBUNTU Linux, considered by many to be the most powerful operating system around, come pre-loaded with plenty of productivity and creative tools to get users started, and there are thousands of other free apps available that can extend and enhance the platform.

According to the company behind the SOL, the laptop’s built-in solar array is capable of fully powering the device, with two hours of sun exposure delivering a charge capable of providing up to 10 hours of battery life.

The specs on the SOL are:
