Vakıfbank İstanbul is the undisputed new world volleyball champion after outlasting Unilever Volei of Brazil in straight sets (25-23, 27-25, 25-16) to clinch the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland, for the first time on Sunday.

Vakıfbank star Jovana Brakocevic topped the scoreboard with 23 points, including three blocks and one serving ace. Captain Kirdar Sonsirma Gözde, Christiane Fürst and Carolina Costagrande added 14, seven and five points apiece. Blocker Carol was the top scorer for Unilever with 12 points, including seven blocks, followed by Gabriela Guimaraes with 10.

With Sunday’s victory Vakıfbank extended its winning streak to 52, an envious record indeed. Vakıfbank was undefeated in 48 matches on its way to winning the CEV Champions League, the Acıbadem Women’s League, the Turkish Cup and the Super Cup last season. It won four matches in a row in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship to extend its winning run to 52 games.
