A GUNMAN believed to be a 12-year-old student and a teacher who tried to protect other students are dead after a shooting at a Nevada middle school.

Eyewitnesses said a 13 or 14-year-old student opened fire on a teacher who approached him and tried to convince him to put down the gun. Two boys are also in critical condition in hospital after the shooting.

Police confirmed the teacher and gunman were killed in the school shooting. The gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot, Sparks City Manager Shawn Carey told Reno Gazette-Journal earlier. Police said the gunman, who they described as “middle school aged”, acted alone. No shots were fired by law enforcement, they said.

The shooter, reported to be 13 or 14 years old, opened fire near a basketball court at the Sparks Middle School in Reno, a witness said.

“The one deceased is a staff member of the school,” Washoe County School District police chief Mike Mieras told reporters, adding: “The other deceased individual at this point in time appears to be a student-slash-suspect in this case.”

The first reports of the shooting came in at about 7.15am (1.15am Tuesday ADST), about 15 minutes before the first classes were set to begin. The shooting happened on the school’s campus, but outside the school building itself, according to police.

Two boys were in critical condition in hospital after the shooting, Renown Regional Hospital spokesperson Angela Rambo told RGJ.com. Police said one of the boys has undergone surgery and the other is “doing well”.see more
