U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney has edged ahead of current President Barack Obama in a poll carried out by the Pew Research Center among likely voters in the United States. The republican would take 49% compared to the democrats 45%. This is a substantial gain for Romney who just one month ago trailed by 9 percentage points.

The picture looks different among registered voters with a tie between the two candidates.

Other polls found that the republican former governor of Massachusetts increased his support following the first of three presidential debate, which took place in Denver on October 3rd. However, most showed Obama retaining the lead.

The Pew poll also revealed that three quarters of voters believe Romney did a better job in the debate.

The Michigan born republican saw gains in his support from women, white non-Hispanics and those younger than 50.

This week the focus of the campaign for the White House shifts to the debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican nominee hoping to replace him, Paul Ryan.
