Grammy-winning hip hop star Lil Wayne is in critical condition in Los Angeles after being admitted to hospital twice this week for seizures, celebrity news website TMZ reports.

The 30-year-old rapper, who has a history of seizures, was first rushed to Cedars Sinai hospital on Tuesday after suffering multiple episodes, TMZ says.

He left the following day but was re-admitted hours later, and his condition has not stabilised since.

TMZ reported he has been placed in a medically induced coma and is breathing through a ventilator.

However, friend and fellow rapper Mack Maine tweeted on Friday that Lil Wayne – real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr – is alert and watching a basketball game.

A publicist for the rapper did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

But Lil Wayne tweeted: “I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love.”

In October, the star, who won four Grammy awards in 2008 including best rap song and best rap album, reportedly suffered a number of seizures while on his private jet.

Last September, the tattooed New Orleans native celebrated his 30th birthday by overtaking Elvis Presley for the number of times he has made Billboard’s Hot 100 pop chart, with 109 appearances.

Young Weezy, as he is known, counts President Barack Obama among his fans and has been rapping since the age of eight.

He has 10 studio albums under his belt and served time in a New York jail in 2010 for unlawful possession of a firearm.
