White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel at around 7pm to notify the public, that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected Benedict XVI’s successor.
The 266th Pontiff of the Catholic Church has been decided after only two days.
He appeared on the Balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to crowds cheering.
Crowds were celebrating in St Peter’s Square awaiting his appearance for almost an hour after the white smoke came from the chapel.
Benedict XVI was the first pope in 598 years to resign, due to health issues.
