The Ohirune Cafe Corne – which would be Japan’s first “nap salon” for women – is set to open central Tokyo to give sleep-deprived women editors and workers a chance to rejuvenate, this announced Nemulog, the café’s operating company. The café will start business today, Nov. 19, in Tokyo’s Jinbocho district, home to many publishing companies. Nemulog, a web-based company that provides online services to help users manage their health, says that the café will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The café’s design – white lace curtains hanging from the ceiling and a refreshing scent – was based on suggestions from the company’s 34,000 online members. “I often hear what working women need most is sleep,” said Sakiko Tsukashima, who operates the salon. “I hope they will use our salon to refresh themselves.” The “nap salon” will offer 10-minute nap in a dimly lit room with eight beds at the cost of 150 yen ($1.50). Users can choose from 14 types of pillows, which vary in height and firmness. The café area of the salon will offer food and drink. Yuki Kawazoe, president of Nemulog, said, “I believe that our salon is the nation’s first such establishment for women.”
Around 20 companies involved in the “sleep business” are cooperating in this project by Nemulog. These companies will be offering slumber wear, electric blankets, a new alarm clock that resembles earphones and other items, and they can get user feedback about the products that they will be offering for use in the salon. Nemulog will also be doing lectures on how to sleep well at the salon on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays, and after 6 p.m. on weekdays when the salon closes.
