Men are born innocent

Birth is the most basic fact of human life. Every human being is born through a natural process. But the process of birth is out of scope of this article. What I argue is that every child is born innocent and purest in his nature.

This belief exists in the form of a theory since the time of Aristotle by the name “Tabula rasa” which means “Blank slate”. This theory holds the point that men are born without built-in mental content and knowledge comes to them via experience and perception. Sigmund Freud also featured this thesis in his theories of psychoanalysis.

The purity of newly created human mind can be judged from various acts of childhood. Little angel’s smile during a deep sleep, crying for the sake of attention and fighting with fellows after he grows up a bit but talking in the most friendly way after a moment, all depict the presence of pure heart in purely human nature.

Men are born innocent. A child is never born a Muslim or a Christian or a Hindu or a Jewish. It is the society and people around him who make him so. He never develops alien feelings of hatred, jealousy and rudeness by him-self rather these are evoked from some negative attitudes and provoked through some negative actions.

Men are born innocent. The pressure that is exerted by the society plays vital role in changing the in-born qualities to learned behaviors. For instance, if a poor child is forced to collect garbage material from the streets and finds no other way to survive in a society where class difference touches the height and where lower class people cannot even get clean water to drink, he will surely develop the feelings to take revenge from that unjust society and will automatically be driven towards negative acts like robbery, thefts and murders.

Men are born innocent. If they do not remain innocent, it is none of their fault. It is the society and the system which forces them to become so. In developing countries like ours where one observes many innocents working in publishing houses but no one can read those published books, where small children collecting wrappers from the garbage have never tasted the thing that was wrapped inside and where sweet angels washing dishes in hotels can never afford those expensive cuisines for themselves, what can you expect more than murders, street crimes and thefts? When output is negative, how can one expect the input to be positive?

Men are born innocent. They can survive as innocent if they are not deprived of their rights and if they are not grinded by the negative social attitudes, poverty and inequality. These are the negatives of a society which make them impure and compel them to throw away the innocence which is their real essence.
