The winner of a pageant for Filipina domestic workers in the UAE is donating her prize – a Dubai-Manila round-trip air ticket – so a distressed fellow maid can return home.

Eleven ladies vied for the title of Miss Kabayan Kapit Bisig (KKB) Dubai 2013 on Friday.

The contest was organised by the KKB Foundation – a group that looks after the welfare of workers from the Philippines in the UAE – to raise awareness and funds to help repatriate abused maids.

Norma Sanita, who was crowned Miss KKB 2013, told 7DAYS: “I am happy I won the ticket, but it will go to my kababayan who want to leave and go back.”

The generous household helper said she considered herself “one of the lucky ones” to have kind employers and wanted to assist those not as fortunate.

“I have seen many of our women being treated very badly. One of the maids I know was even beaten with a hammer by her boss – and so many others are abused everyday – so I want to be able to help them get away,” Sanita explained.

The 40-year-old Filipina, who has worked with the same family for nearly seven years, said her employers had been very supportive of her participation in the contest.

“They let me take time off to go to rehearsals and gave me money to buy new shoes and an outfit for the contest, and before that, they even paid for me to study when I moved here,” she said.

The contest, held at Manila 365 Disco at the Ramee Guestline Deira Hotel, scored ladies on their style, talent and ability to answer questions from judges during the pageant.

In the final round, Sanita was asked what her definition of beauty is, to which she replied: “True beauty isn’t just how you look, it’s about your true character.”
