KABUL: President Hamid Karzai welcomed the announcement of the preliminary outcome of the runoff presidential polls as another step towards completion of the election process.
“People with their mammoth participation in the elections exhibited their strong resolve for strengthening democracy in Afghanistan. They patiently waited for the initial results to be declared,” a statement quoted the president as saying on Tuesday.
“The winner will be announced once the electoral complaints were assessed and fair votes separated from fraudulent ones,” said President Karzai, urging the electoral commissions to audit ballots keeping in mind their historical duty.
The president hoped the two candidates will cooperate with the electoral bodies to steer the elections towards a national feat. “I am confident that the two candidates will reach a negotiated solution in line with the national interests of Afghanistan.”
Karzai elucidated that elections would have been impossible sans the sacrifices rendered by the Afghan security forces. “The Afghan nation will never forget sacrifices of their security forces.”
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday announced the preliminary results of the June 14 runoff elections. Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai took lead by getting 4,485,888 votes (56.44%), and his rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah got 3,461,639 votes (43.56%).
