The Afghan President Hamid Karzai left for Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan early Wednesday to attend the inauguration ceremony of the tri-nation railway project.

The inauguration ceremony of the Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan railway project will be held on Wednesday in Ashgabat.

The railway project will connect Turkmenistan and Tajikistan via Afghanistan. This project is considered as a big leap towards strengthening the economic relations between the three countries.

Officials had said that the extension of economic cooperation and strengthening of commercial relations with the neighbouring countries is an integral part of the Government’s foreign policy, and to put an end to numerous security challenges within the region.

The 400-kilometer rail project will connect the Afghan town of Akina-Andkhoy to Atamurat Ymamnazar in Turkmenistan and Pyandzh in Tajikistan.

The construction is planned to begin in July in Turkmenistan. Turkmen workers are going to build the Afghan section of the railway project.

Previously, a 75-kilometer rail-line from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan became operational in 2011.
