KABUL: President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday said he expected the new government to be formed this week.
“Afghanistan urgently needs a new government, as my term has come to an end,” said the president at a gathering to commemorate the Martyrs Week and the 13th death anniversary of Ahmad Shah Massoud at the Loya Jirga pavilion. “We want a new government and the candidates – Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah – can give it to us,” he said.
He emphasized that an immediate consensus between the two candidates was in the interest of Afghanistan. Speaking on the candor and personality of Ahmad Shah Massoud, Karzai described him as a true son of the soil and a patriot. “Massoud sacrificed his life to gain independence, sovereignty and prosperity for Afghanistan. And I will never forget his catchword that ‘I’ll never leave Afghanistan, even if one notch of the county is left,” said Karzai.
The president urged Afghans to follow the footsteps of the martyrs, who coveted an independent, sovereign and developed Afghanistan. The president stressed on education and national unity to steer the country towards prosperity.
