Several Dubai residents have already taken up the ice bucket challenge in the city with individual videos and pictures doing the rounds on social networking sites, but now a non-profit group of ordinary residents in the city have come together to take up the cause of those affected with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease.

The group, called DubaiALSicebucketchallenge, is actively inviting fellow residents to come forward and take the now very popular challenge on Friday, August 29, 8am at the Kite beach (behind Saga World Dubai).

The local idea takes a small step ahead in environment conservation and will use water from the ocean as compared to normal water being used elsewhere.

“The original idea of this initiative is to dump a bucket of iced water on yourself. As you know, clean water is a scarce resource in many parts of the world and we don’t want to waste it. That is why we will use the ocean water, of which we have plenty. You will just need to bring your own bucket,” reads the post on its Facebook page.

Of the 130,000 guests invited on social media, 128 have confirmed as going and 39 have been tagged as probable who could participate in the event.

“We, as a united and very diverse Dubai community have the chance to make an impact with our initiative, and challenge other communities of leading world cities to support our initiative and continue spreading the awareness about ALS,” it adds further.

If you are a community member and want to be a part of this global campaign, it’s perhaps time to get wet this Friday.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body.
