Egyptian left-wing activist Mona Mina has won the seat of secretary-general of the Doctors Syndicate, becoming the first woman and Christian to hold the post.

The veteran rights activist, who is one of the founding members of activist group “Doctors Without Rights,” was elected on Thursday, according to the London-based pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

Mina, who is known for her efforts campaigning for better wages and working conditions for doctors, is also one of the founding members of the Independence list, a coalition of non-Brotherhood doctors.

Last week, at the Syndicate’s mid-term elections, Mina’s coalition won the board’s majority.

By winning 11 of 12 seats available on the union’s main board, the Independence list ended the Islamist group’s long-standing dominance.

During the first Syndicate meeting of the Independence list on Thursday, six Brotherhood members were reported absent.

Created in 2011, the Independence list originally contested Syndicate elections against the Brotherhood’s Doctors for Egypt list.
