Dolce & Gabbana has cast a trio of Spanish grandmothers in its spring 2015 campaign. The elderly women are seen modelling the label’s next season accessories in the images shot by Domenico Dolce. One sees them clutching heavily-embellished purses while wearing gold tiaras and red carnations in their hair while another shows them carrying what appear to be Dolce & Gabbana Barbie dolls in satin-lined boxes.
Clearly not used to the attention, one of the women is seen laughing as she partially covers her face with her hand. The trio is joined in the series of ads by a bona fide bullfighter (José Maria Manzanares) as well as supermodels Bianca Balti, Vittoria Ceretti, Irina Sharipova and Blanca Padilla. Playing on the theme of the Spanish-inspired spring collection, the models all wear their hair in low buns with centre partings. Deep red lips complete the look.
An accompanying video takes the form of a Spanish street fiesta, complete with flamenco dancing, waving fans and hollers of ‘olé!’ But while the use of elderly women in ad campaigns is inspired, Dolce & Gabbana is not the first fashion brand to choose senior citizens to model its wares.
Last year New Zealand designer Karen Walker cast women aged between 65 and 92 to model her eyewear collection.
And Cole Haan celebrated its 85th birthday by choosing fellow 1928 babies China Machado, Elliot Erwitt, Captain Jim Lovell and the now late Maya Angelou to appear in its ads. .. see more
