All eyes will be on Paris Saint-Germain in the French league match at Marseilles on Sunday, when former England captain David Beckham is expected to make his debut. Beckham, 37, joined PSG two weeks ago in a surprise move.
French TV channel Canal Plus plans to watch Paris Saint Germain’s newest recruit very closely this weekend when he makes his debut playing for the Ligue 1 football club. The cable giant has set up a camera that will follow David Beckham exclusively during his first match.
Alongside what has been baptised “Beck’Cam”, an additional 40 cameras and some 300 technicians have been brought in to follow the match against rivals Olympique de Marseille at 9pm Paris time (8pm GMT) at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris on Sunday.
The 37-year-old ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder is hotly anticipated in Paris, despite his age (he will be the second oldest player in Ligue 1 and he has already said that he does not expect to play in every game). But his global fame is expected to bring a generous helping of publicity to the wealthy club, which was bought in 2011 by a Qatari sports investment fund.
Known as ‘Le Spice Boy’ in France for his marriage to former Spice Girl Victoria, Beckham arrived in Paris two weeks ago but has yet to make an appearance on the pitch.
The club has not won the French title since 1994, but is currently leading the Ligue 1 standings with 45 points from 22 games.
