Afghan carpets clinch first position in China int’l expo

KABUL: Afghan carpet secured first position for its high quality and charming designs in the international Tibetan carpet exhibition held from August 6 to 11, in China.
Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industries (MoCI), Muzamil Shinwari, said that Afghan carpets got first position based on quality and design. The competition was held among 147 countries in China international carpet expo.
Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday he said that 15 Afghan carpet traders participated in the exhibition, where companies of Qadir Rauf and Kazimi Allahdad clinched the best hand-woven carpets award for design and quality.
The Afghan carpet traders, who participated in China international exhibition, had also signed multiple contracts valued $1 million with their Chinese counterparts in order to export Afghan carpet to China, he added.
While pointing out challenges, he said that lack of energy, suitable industrial parks and insecurity are main problems faced by the carpet industry in the country. He said the ministry in engaged in efforts to provide different facilities to carpet weavers for further development.
While voicing her pleasure over the achievement, Chief of the Export Promotion Agency (EPA) Najla Habibyar said that we are preparing for another international exhibition which would be held in Germany. “We are hoping to cash this opportunity as well in Germany.”
Design is the most important element in the international markets. Therefore, the Afghan carpet producers would meet international market’s requirements through new attractive designs, she added.
President of the Carpet Traders Union, Mohammad Hadi Hossaini, said that carpet industry is the most important industry in Afghanistan, but unfortunately lack of government support, lands, loans and transit facilities have hit hard the industry in the past decade.
He said the government and concerned organizations should take measure to address the challenges and lead the carpet industry towards further development.
