Running a small business with an equally small-but-reliable customer base is fine for some. Others have visions of grandeur. They look at successful entrepreneurs who grew their businesses beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. If you wish to grow your business, you likely realize luck alone won’t carry the day. Growing a business requires a smart strategy that allows an enterprise to expand in the market continually.
A single roadmap to business growth success doesn’t exist. The path for each business may be different. However, some general strategies might work well for any entrepreneur hoping to expand.
Determine Demand in the Market
You may wish to exist, but you won’t possess the final say on the matter. Growth depends on the volume of interested customers. Without them, you won’t be able to grow successfully since not enough people will buy your products or services. Look at current sales figures for your business. Reliable sales figures may indicate expansion makes sense. That said, success could be geographically driven. Opening a second location might suffer from less interest that exists with the first location. Research demand levels to, hopefully, avoid a costly mistake.
Review Your Capitalization Requirements
Expansion requires spending money. Overspending isn’t advisable since doing so involves wasting funds. Cutting too many costs, especially cutting out essentials, won’t contribute to a business’ success. For example, purchasing unreliable second-hand computers may undermine the ability to handle necessary office tasks. Renting office space in an out of the way location might also provide self-defeating.
Before expanding, it becomes necessary to perform an audit of the business’ necessary operating costs. If current levels of revenue or available funding can’t support the expansion, then it may be best to wait. Otherwise, the resultant debt could lead to potential bankruptcy.
Devise and Effective Marketing
A powerful marketing strategy may help generate the revenue streams necessary for the expansion to continue. Potential customers need to know what your business offers, where the business is, how to purchase, and so on. A solid marketing strategy could get all this information out there and more.
“More” includes a marketing campaign’s potential to create feelings of want in the consumer public. A brilliant marketing campaign stressing points about business model innovation may nudge an otherwise disinterested customer into purchasing. With so much financially on the line during an expansion, seeking out a marketing firm capable of tapping into the right consumer psychology is worth doing.
Establish a Powerful Social Media Presence
Social media marketing and communications contribute significantly to the good fortunes of many businesses. In addition to raising awareness about a company, an active social media presence serves public relations duties, assists with branding, and allows for interactions directly with customers. With so many outstanding social media firms to choose from, a small business proprietor should have much difficulty choosing one capable of driving an impacting social media campaign.
And the campaign should be broad-based. Facebook and Twitter won’t be enough. Investing time and effort on Instagram, YouTube, and even smaller, lesser-known social media pages could maximize success potential.
Always Work on Building the Brand
A company benefits from a positive image. So, effort must go into creating a positive brand image. A brand image refers to what the public thinks and feels about a business. Far too many companies allow factors outside their control to create their brand. Such a reactive strategy won’t likely assist with growth potential. Taking steps to create a powerful, positive brand makes more sense. Through controlling the brand image, a business partially controls some of its public perceptions. Keeping that perception in a positive territory would help during the expansion stage and long beyond.
Business growth can go from a concept to a reality. All the steps must be done right, though. If not, things might not work out desirably and without troubling consequences.
