The Afghan government has warned Pakistan it will never take part in any meeting with the neighbouring country if demands from Kabul are not accepted by Islamabad, reports following Brussels meeting between the United States, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have suggested.
Washington has expressed optimism that the meeting, that was hosted by US Secretary of State John Kerry, has resulted in progress in talks between Pakistani chief of army staff Ashfaq Kayani and the Afghan president Hamid Karzai who has called upon Islamabad to bring a number of Taliban leaders to the negotiation table of peace talks with the group.
“We are delighted to be here. We are honoured to be hosting President Karzai, General Kayani, Foreign Secretary Kayani, the members of President Karzai’s cabinet, defence minister, his security advisor, his foreign minister to have a continuing trilateral discussion with respect to the security and other issues regarding the relationships in the region as well as the road forward heading towards 2014,” Secretary Kerry said.
This is as some of the former Taliban members believe Kabul’s call for efforts by Pakistan to bring the group members for the peace talks will not have any result.
“Continuation of dialogues through Americans and the Taliban for releasing the prisoners will have outcomes, but talks will not be realised if pressure is put through Pakistan,” said Sayed Akbar Agha, former leader of Taliban’s Jaysh al-Muslimin.
Providing stable security has been what Afghans have been constantly demanding for years, a matter for which government of Afghanistan has made efforts.
However, the efforts by the Afghan government have not yielded and there are fears if Pakistan would cooperate to bring Taliban members for peace talks.
“Pakistan’s fist will be open if their military do this, but Pakistan will never stop cooperating with al-Qaeda,” said Jawid Kohistani, political expert, “It will never pressure the Taliban.”
