Asians have now surpassed Hispanics as the demographic moving to the U.S. in greatest number, according to a new study released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.
Roughly 430,000 Asians moved to the U.S. in 2010 compared with 370,000 Hispanics, according to Pew. The numbers contrast sharply with 2007, when 390,000 Asians moved to the U.S., compared with 540,000 Hispanics.
The downturn in Hispanic immigration has been attributed to the economic slowdown in the U.S., tougher deportation and border enforcement, and declining birthrates in Mexico, according to The New York Times.
Roughly 45 percent of Hispanic immigrants are in the U.S. illegally, while about 13 to 15 percent of Asian immigrants are, according to the study.
