KABUL: Although Pakistani military has been accused of shelling rockets into Afghanistan’s territory, causing casualties and displacements, last week when Pakistani forces attempted to construct new military installations inside Afghanistan, the Afghan security forces smacked them with tit for tat response as a retaliation. Afterwards, Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif visited Kabul in a bid to bring the situation under control.
Defense Minister, Gen. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi on Monday held a one-on-one meeting with Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Raheel to confer over some hot-button issues including scourge of terrorism and border management. Bilateral issues were also discussed in detail, said a statement from the Defense Ministry.
“Both countries were vulnerable to militant attacks, and chaos in Afghanistan directly destabilized Pakistan,” said Mohammadi.
Afghanistan’s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi, his Pakistani counterpart Gen. Raheel Sharif and the US-led ISAF Commander Gen. Joseph Dunford also joined the meeting. The Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi said that Pakistani Gen. Raheel Sharif assured his country’ support on fight against terrorism, said the statement.
Earlier, similar meetings were held without any positive results, and some MPs believe that such meetings have taken place in many countries, but unfortunately the outcome was waste of time only, and led to nowhere. But it was the use of military that brought all the contentious issues and conflicts to an end. Still Afghan masses are skeptical about Pakistan’s commitment toward peace in Afghanistan.
