Following the White House’s lead, the Defense Department on Friday released a new strategy aimed at using more mobile devices.

The DoD strategy calls for more standards for devices and apps; more modern wireless infrastructure; better spectrum management; increased security; and more interoperable systems, among other goals.

“The DoD Mobile Device Strategy takes advantage of existing technology, the ability to use or build custom apps, and a workforce increasingly comfortable with mobile devices,” Teri Takai, DoD chief information officer, said in a statement.  “This strategy is not simply about embracing the newest technology — it is about keeping the DoD workforce relevant in an era when information and cyberspace play a critical role in mission success.”

In May the White House unveiled its Digital Government Strategy, which included goals for streamlining the way government agencies use mobile devices.

President Obama released a memo timed to the announcement directing government agencies to adopt the new data standards and to follow the plan’s timeline for changing the way the government delivers digital and mobile content and procures mobile devices and wireless services. All agencies are due to take inventory of their mobile devices and service contracts, with an eye to centralizing procurement and extract savings on the reported $1.2 billion the government spends each year on its 1.5 million users.
