For Giuseppe Mascara, contentment with life in Dubai comes easy. The Al Nasr frontman looks round from his seat in his villa’s vast living room and points at the azure Arabian Gulf that meets a narrow strip of beach backing onto his property.
This is paradise,” he says in Italian, before his wife adds an approving smile. The Mascaras – five in all, including three boys ages three, seven and 10 – have settled here since July, having swapped a fishbowl existence in Italy’s Serie A for the relatively sedate surroundings of the Pro League.
“In Sicily, there is another rhythm of life,” Mascara says of the place where he honed his talents and spent the majority of his career. “Everything is fast, fast, fast. This country is quiet … every day, inshallah.”
Despite the flecks of Arabic, it is the English language currently concentrating minds; he and his wife tutored for 20 hours a week, while his eldest son is spending this late April morning with a personal teacher.
His father’s English seems perfectly passable, too, although for this meeting Mascara prefers a translator, Michele Bon, coach of Nasr’s reserve team and assistant to Walter Zenga, the manager.
