US Secretary of Defense, Mr. Leon Panetta, visited the Director of the National Directorate of Security of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mr. Assadullah Khalid, at his hospital today.
Afghan foreign ministry Office of the Spokesman & Director General of Communications following a statement said, “Mr. Panetta expressed satisfaction about Mr. Khalid’s rapidly improving health.”
The source further added, “Both sides also discussed the security situation in the country, the Afghanistan-US Bilateral Security Agreement and reconciliation efforts.”
Asadullah Khalid was wounded when the bomber struck at a guesthouse used by the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in a heavily guarded area of the capital. The intelligence agency said he had survived a “terrorist attack”.
Khalid was rushed into surgery at an NDS hospital after the attack. He was visited by President Hamid Karzai, signalling his importance in the fight against the Taliban as Nato forces prepare to withdraw in 2014.
He was later admitted to a US hospital for further treatment. The attacker was purportedly carrying a peace message on behalf of the Taliban when he detonated himself.
The head of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was killed by a fake Taliban peace envoy with a bomb in his turban in October last year.
President Karzai said the attack on Asadullah Khalid was plotted in Quetta city of pakistan and the suicide bomber came to Kabul from Pakistan.
