4 Things You Didn’t Know About The Psychology Of Eye Contact

Eyes- they can tell you a lot about a person, if you know what to look for. What they are feeling; if they are paying attention, if they are shy- all can be deduced through a person’s eyes. Here are 4 things you (probably) didn’t know about eye contact, so that the next time you lock eyes, you know exactly what yours are saying about you.

How Long Is Too Long?

Eye contact is really difficult to get right. Too much and you’re staring. Not enough and you can seem distracted or bored. But just enough signals to the other person that you are listening to them and focusing on what they are saying, which is a confidence boost for them. A good tip would be to make sure when you do look away, you look away at something that is relevant to the conversation, like the screen of their computer if you’re discussing a current essay. That way you are still paying attention, but not staring.

Blink And You’ll Miss It

Blinking too much can suggest that you are feeling stressed or uncomfortable. If the other person notices, probably the best thing to do would be to say why you are stressed or uncomfortable, as if you lie sometimes your pupils move, which would give away to the other person that you are avoiding telling the truth. However, if you don’t blink enough it indicates you are trying to control your eye movements, to mask reactions. This can give away excitement at the hand you were dealt if you were playing poker, if the other person can recognise you aren’t blinking enough in order to mask it.

Dilated Pupils

Emotions can cause a change in pupil size. However, pupil size is also influenced by light conditions in your surroundings so reading too much into it may lead you on the wrong path when decoding a person.

The Perfect Disguise

You may have noticed that some people (especially celebrities) hide behind dolce and dolce and gabanna glassesto to shield their eyes. Glasses add an extra dimension to eye contact psychology, as hiding behind glasses can indicate shyness. However, due to images in the media of a stereotypical ‘smart’ person wearing glasses, people have come to associate wearing glasses with intelligence.

So, yes your eyes can say a lot about you, but so can other aspects of non-verbal communication, such as mouth movements, body posture and fidgeting. I figure the best way to make sure your eyes project who you are is just to relax, be yourself, and let your eyes do the talking.
