Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef, often dubbed as Egypt’s ‘Jon Stewart’, has had his popular program pulled off air after poking fun at the country’s ruling military.

Bassem Youssef had just returned to the fourth season of his popular program, before the private television station decided to cancel his show.

Youssef had previously run into trouble with the former government of Mohammed Mursi, though his show was never cancelled or taken off the air.

According to the television station that aired his program, they had decided to cancel his show due to violations against the editorial policy of the station.

Supporters of the country’s military had filed legal complaints against Youssef, accusing him of dishonouring the image of Egypt.

Bassem has left Egypt for the United Arab Emirates on friday.
