KABUL: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday denounced as a “disgraceful and shameful act” a hate movie that was recently released in the United States.
The anti-Islam film was produced by American-Israeli real estate investor Sam Basil and released by the same Christian pastor who last year attempted to burn copies of the holy Quran.
It touched off violent protests across the Muslim world. One such protest in the Benghazi city of Libya led to the death of four Americans, including the US ambassador.
The maker of the film “Innocence of Muslims” abused his right to freedom of expression, the secretary-general told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York.
“Freedoms of expression should be and must be guaranteed and protected, when they are used for common justice, common purpose. When some people use this freedom to provoke or humiliate others’ values and beliefs, then this cannot be protected in such a way.”
On Sept. 13, Ban called for calm in North Africa and the Middle East and condemned the attack that killed US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americas in Benghazi.
His press office said the secretary-general was deeply disturbed by the recent violence in Libya and elsewhere in the Middle East. “Nothing justifies such killings and attacks. He condemns the hateful film that appears to have been deliberately designed to sow bigotry and bloodshed.
