Tonight, the very best writers, directors and performers in cinema will be celebrated at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood. Will Gravity and 12 Years A Slave continue their impressive run of gongs as seen at the recent EE Baftas?
Will Jennifer Lawrence land herself her second Oscar – this time for best supporting actress in American Hustle?
As always, we can only speculate at this time but as history proves; the best performers in film don’t always walk home with the prize.
Scrolling through the past years of Oscar nominees we track down the top ten surprising actors, actresses and directors you would think must have won a gong in the past – yet some haven’t even ever been nominated.
Leonardo DiCaprio has never won an Oscar (Picture: AP)
10 – Leonard DiCaprio
Will this finally be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year? The blonde actor has lost out on an Oscar three times before (best actor in Blood Diamond, and The Aviator – and a best supporting nod for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) but has double chances this year – as best actor and best picture (as producer) for The Wolf of Wall Street. But how was he not nominated for Romeo & Juliet – and how did he miss out when Titanic received 14 nominations?

9 – Tom Cruise
Three Oscar nominations, but no Oscar wins. Tom Cruise wowed with his performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia but it was not enough to bag an award.
Demi Moore has never won an Oscar (Picture: AP)
8 – Demi Moore
Demi Moore may be more known now for her love-life than her film roles, but there was a time that she really could act. She pulled on the heartstrings in Ghost and gave a good support role in A Few Good Men. But an Oscar has always evaded her. It’s a well-known fact that an easy way to garner an Oscar nomination is to change your appearance (a prosthetic nose here, some weight gain/loss there) so we reckon if an actress shaved her head for a role today – like Moore did in GI Jane – she would probably get nominated for that alone.
James McAvoy has never won an Oscar (Picture: David Cheskin/PA Wire)
7 – James McAvoy
Scottish actor James McAvoy gave incredibly convincing performances in both The Last King of Scotland and Atonement – but got nominated for neither. Recent Brit flick Filth showed that this actor is one of the finest around so a nomination (at least) must surely be inevitable in the long run.
Michael Fassbender has never won an Oscar (Picture: AP)
6 – Michael Fassbender
German-born, Irish-raised Michael Fassbender is up for best supporting actor this year for his role in 12 Years a Slave – but faces stiff competition from Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club, Bradley Cooper for American Hustle, and surprise Bafta winner Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips. While the nomination is great, the fact he wasn’t even noted for his roles in Hunger and Shame (both by 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen) is an outrage.
Amy Adams has never won an Oscar (Picture: EPA)
5 – Amy Adams
This year marks the fifth time Amy Adams will be nominated for an Oscar – the first as best actress (she was up for best supporting actress in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter and The Master) but if she wins for her role in American Hustle it will be her first.
Gabourey Sidibe has never won an Oscar (Picture: Getty)
4 – Gabourey Sidibe
As much as everyone loves Sandra Bullock, was The Blind Side really her best performance in 2009? Not really. Especially when compared to Gabourey Sidibe’s heart stopping turn as Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones. Gabs was definitely robbed during the 2010 Oscars.
3 – Samuel L Jackson
Samuel L Jackson is a legend. No one disputes this. Whether he’s kicking ass in a Quentin Tarantino film or wearing an eye patch in a Marvel movie, he’s just always cool. But despite appearing in over 100 films, he has only been Oscar nominated once – for playing Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. And he lost out to Martin Landau for his performance in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.
Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar (Picture: Getty Images)
2 – Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock is arguably the best film director in British history. A pioneer of film making – not to mention his expert ability to shock audiences – Hitchcock’s career spanned six decades, landing five Oscar nominations. But he never won one.
Ewan McGregor has never even been nominated for an Oscar (Picture: PA)
1 – Ewan McGregor
Serious actor – and one not afraid to get his kit off (he does not hold back for his art!) – Ewan McGregor surely has an Oscar, right? He can do it all: Indie art flick, action, comedy, drama, musical – and is convincing in everything. But despite appearing in over 50 films to date, the Scot has not received a single Academy Award nomination. Scandalous!
