ABU DHABI // After two years and Dh179 million, the redeveloped Mushrif Central Park was revealed to a select group on Thursday in advance of Friday’s opening to the public.

The inaugurating event for the revamped space was attended by Government ministers, FNC members and other dignitaries, including Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, National Security Adviser and vice chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development.

The delegation was given a tour of the park by Sultan Alktebi, vice chairman of Al Ain Holding. The tour included visits to new features such as the Wisdom Garden, a fountain with quotes from the founding President Sheikh Zayed inscribed in black granite, and the shade house – a moisture-controlled environment with a variety of plants.

New attractions also include an evening garden, an amphitheatre venue that can accommodate more than 1,000 people, and an animal barn – home to a camel, baby goat, cow, and a pony.

“The new Mushrif Central Park facilities were designed to be a haven for children and families and we sincerely hope that the entire Abu Dhabi community benefits from it on both the recreational and educational levels,” said Abdul Aziz Husain Ahmad, chief executive of Al Ain Properties.

Al Ain Properties and an international team of landscape designers, architects and contractors carried out design and construction work.

In an ode to environmental sustainability, 200 mature trees more than 20 years old were salvaged and used in the new design.

One hundred and fifty thousand shrubs and 1,200 trees were planted as part of the redevelopment.

For irrigation, the park will use reclaimed greywater, which park officials say will result in 40 per cent savings over total water consumption.

Smoking, including shisha, and barbecuing will not be permitted.

Park officials said they sought input from the community throughout the construction process. Comments and suggestions received were considered and implemented wherever possible into the design and operation.

First opened in 1982, Mushrif Park, as it was previously known, was designated as an exclusive domain for women and children, becoming a community hub for multiple generations of nationals and residents.

It is one of the oldest and largest urban parks in the capital, centrally located at Al Karamah (24th) and Mohammed bin Khalifa (15th) streets.

With the addition of the word “Central”, officials hope the new name reflects the park’s geography and its history… see more
