LAHORE: Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Wednesday informed the Lahore High Court that the US government had turned down Pakistan’s request to release and repatriate 32 Pakistanis detained at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan.

Director, Afghanistan desk, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Jalil Khattak appeared before the court.

He said the ministry had sent a letter to the US State Department for the release of detainees but the US government had declined to release them. According to him, it has been confirmed that all 32 detainees are Pakistani nationals and diplomatic efforts are still under way for their repatriation.

Justice Khalid Mahmood asked the director to produce a copy of the letter sent to the US State Department.
