Twitter launches two-factor authentication

Twitter has added two-factor authentication to its social network, bolstering security after several high-profile account hacks including the Associated Press. Users can set up the security measure by going into their Account Settings and choose to have a verification code sent to a smartphone.

When users log in, Twitter will send out a random, six-digit code to type in to access their accounts. Companies such as Google and Facebook also feature two-factor authentication. Twitter security drew scrutiny in recent weeks after several accounts including the AP had been compromised. Last month, a fake tweet from the AP’s account claimed President Obama was injured after two explosions at the White House. The tweet was dismissed by the AP as fake, and their account was suspended.
