WASHINGTON — With a short ride from Blair House to the “Church of Presidents, Donald Trump began the carefully choreographed ritual Friday of the peaceful transfer of power, culminating with his swearing-in at noon as the 45th president of the United States.
In one of his first gestures upon awakening at the President’s Guest house across from the White House, the president-elect tweeted at 7:31 a.m.: “It all begins today! I will see you at 11:00 A.M. for the swearing-in. THE MOVEMENT CONTINUES – THE WORK BEGINS!”
In a sign of the new social media world that Trump has championed, President Obama, in likely his last use of the @POTUS Twitter handle as president, tweeted that “It’s been an honor of my life to serve you.”
“You made me a better leader and a better man,” he wrote. “I won’t stop, I’ll be right there with you as a citizen, inspired by our voices of truth and justice, good humor and love.” He also gently guided readers over to his post-presidency website, obama.org.
Shortly later, Obama could be seen slipping a letter into his Oval Office desk, apparently the traditional missive to his successor, then walked out the door and waved as he strode away down the colonnade.
At 8:33 a.m., Trump, wearing an overcoat and bright red tie, and his wife, Melania, in a bright blue sheath-style dress with bolero-style jacket and gloves, left on a short drive to St. John’s Episcopal Church on nearby Lafayette Square,
After an hour-long prayer service. the Trumps will join outgoing President Obama and first lady Michelle for tea on the South Portico of the White House.
