Three Royal Canadian Mounted Police are dead and at least two more have been “mortally” wounded in a shooting in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, and a suspect is at large, according to tweets from the police agency.

Police are still searching for the suspect, 24-year-old Justin Bourque, who is wearing camouflage and carrying two rifles, based on a photo distributed by the police.

Three shooting victims have been brought to Moncton Hospital, according to various news reports.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police could not be reached by telephone late Wednesday.

At about 8 p.m., the police agency division in New Brunswick began tweeting about a shooter in the area and asking people to stay indoors.

Police said the Bourque is considered armed and dangerous.

At about 11 p.m., the agency tweeted that Bourque was still at large, and they asked residents to stay indoors and leave their outdoor lights on.

New Brunswick Premier David Alward issued a statement saying he was “shocked and saddened” by the ongoing incident.

“On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I would like to my thoughts and prayers to those affected,” Alward said. “I would ask New Brunswickers, particularly those in areas identified by police, to follow the situation as it develops and follow the advice of police.”

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc issued an impassioned plea for residents to stay indoors and he expressed condolences regarding the slain officers.

“This is a very trying evening in our community, please remain calm but vigilant,” LeBlanc said in a statement released on Facebook. “I am confident that the RCMP will soon restore peace and order.”
