YEOSU, South Korea (AFP) – An international expo closed on Sunday in the South Korean city of Yeosu after attracting more than eight million visitors to the south coast port during its 93-day run.

Organisers said 8,047,793 visits had been recorded as of noon on Sunday – they had hoped for about 10 million – to the glittering hi-tech venue on the site of a former dusty cement terminal.

A total of 104 nations and 10 international organisations staged exhibitions at Expo 2012 under the theme “The Living Ocean and Coast”.

Organisers predicted eventual economic benefits worth 19 trillion won (S$20.9 billion) – outweighing more than 11 trillion won spent on the site and new hotels and on upgrading roads and railways.
