Spartanburg – Authorities say the troubled rapper known as DMX was arrested and placed behind bars overnight in South Carolina for driving without a license. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested at 1:59 a.m. Wednesday after an officer spotted him at a Li’l Cricket convenience store. According to a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office report, Newsone reports, a deputy, who was also at the gas station, recognized the controversial hip-hop star.
After running a check on DMX, the officer discovered that already has several outstanding tickets for driving without a license in two towns within Spartanburg County, where he has reportedly relocated, the news outlet writes. “They watched me at the gas station and get in the car,” he told FOX Carolina after his release from the Spartanburg County jail at 6 a.m. “They followed me around the corner, pulled me over, put the cuffs on me and brought me here.” DMX handed the vehicle that was driving over to an unidentified passenger who had a valid driver’s license.
DMX’s five-month-old baby daughter was also in the car at the time of the arrest. Simmons was released after paying a fine. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney, The Associated Press reported. DMX has stated that he does not have a court date, Billboard.com writes. Simmons is no stranger to law trouble. He was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph, The AP states. DMX was also arrested in 2008 after speed-enforcement cameras captured him going 114 mph on a suburban Phoenix freeway, according to USA Today.
