DUBAI // A government official has been arrested after his alleged assault of another driver was posted on YouTube yesterday.

The video appeared to show an Emirati man beating an Asian driver with his aghal until a bystander stepped in to stop the alleged assault.

The man was tracked down and arrested before being referred to prosecution this morning, said Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, deputy chief of Dubai Police.

He said the alleged actions were not representative of the UAE’s culture and tradition and that despite the assailant being a government official, “no one is above the law”.

The dispute arose over a minor accident, according to Maj Gen Al Mazeina. He added that the manner of the official was “inappropriate” and that a case has been registered against him and further investigations will take place today by public prosecutors.

The video of the incident went viral after it was loaded to Youtube and over 40 complaints were filed to the Dubai Police Twitter feed.

The tweets to police caught the attention of high profile figures such as UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed, UAE University Political Science Professor, Dr Abdel Khaelq Abdullah and other figures in the country.

The video has been since removed from the web by the user.
