A video showing onlookers in China watching a toddler smoking a cigarette on a street but doing nothing to stop him has drawn widespread criticism. The boy, who appears to be aged around three, is seen in the footage puffing away as he sits on a child’s chair at a street stall.
Several passers-by watch him coughing and spluttering from inhaling – with some even laughing at his antics – but no one attempts to take the cigarette away from him.
The youngster appears keen to wander off at one stage, but a man picks him up and returns him to his seat at the roadside stall. The video, obtained by LiveLeak, has prompted a social media backlash and sparked fresh debate about China’s smoking habit.
China is the world’s largest consumer of tobacco. One social media user described the footage as “sick”.
Another said the boy was being used to attract attention to his family’s market stall.
