INTERNET porn is to be blocked automatically, with consumers having to “opt in” to view it.

David Cameron has set out plans for Internet service providers to provide family-friendly content automatically – meaning anyone wishing to access pornography would have to change their settings to allow it.

The Prime Minister has also announced that possessing violent pornography containing simulated rape scenes will be made a crime.

The crackdown comes as Mr Cameron warns that access to online porn is “corroding childhood,” and new powers will be brought in to trace illegal content viewed by paedophiles.

Internet providers will also contact millions of existing customers and ask them to decide whether to activate filters to stop children accessing unsuitable material.

Speaking as a father, Mr Cameron will say in a speech: “I want to talk about the internet. The impact it is having on the innocence of our children.

“How online pornography is corroding childhood.

“And how, in the darkest corners of the internet, there are things going on that are a direct danger to our children, and that must be stamped out.”

The PM will add that he wants Britain “to be the best place to raise a family.”

In a move called for by women’s groups, ministers will close a loophole which allows the possession of “rape” porn, bringing the position in England and Wales in line with Scotland.

Mr Cameron said that “what you can’t get in a shop, you will no longer be able to get online.”

He also wants Warning pages to pop up if people try to access illegal content that will tell them of the consequences of their actions if they click to view it.

Search engines including Google will be given until October to introduce further measures to block access to illegal content.

A Google spokesman said: “We have a zero tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse imagery.

“Whenever we discover it, we respond quickly to remove and report it.

“We recently donated five million dollars (£3.28 million) to help combat this problem and are committed to continuing the dialogue with the Government on these issues.”
