(CNN) — Novak Djokovic fought off a valiant challenge from seven-time champion Roger Federer Sunday to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title for the second time after a five-set thriller on Centre Court.
It was a performance of typical determination from the Serbian top seed, who shrugged off the disappointment of failing to convert a match point in a pulsating fourth set to wrap it up in the decider.
Leading 5-4, he forged two more match points on the Federer service and when the Swiss maestro dumped a backhand into the net, Djokovic was champion again. After dropping the opener on a tiebreak to the 32-year-old Federer, Djokovic took the next two sets and with two breaks of service led 5-2 in the fourth set.

But Federer, the darling of the crowd, fought back, saving a match point along the way as he claimed five straight games to force a fifth set. The momentum was now with the 17-time grand slam champion, but not for the first time in his career Djokovic dug deep to find a way to win. It was his seventh triumph at the highest level and he will take over from Rafael Nadal at the top of the world rankings Monday.
