Fans gathering at both V Festival venues enjoyed the hottest day of 2012 so far – although Nicki Minaj put something of a dampener on things by pulling out at the last minute.
As well as the sounds of rockers The Killers, Snow Patrol and music legends The Stone Roses, festival-goers at Weston Park in Shropshire today and Hylands Park near Chelmsford tomorrow were hoping to see the US act strut her stuff on the 4Music stage.
However, Minaj announced on Saturday morning that she was pulling out because she felt unwell as she boarded a flight from New York on Friday.
‘Miss Minaj’s band and crew have all arrived in the UK ahead of the performance at the festival this weekend, however as the artist herself boarded her flight from New York on Friday 17th August, she felt unwell again,’ V Festival organisers said.
‘This is despite having thought she had overcome her vocal chord issues from earlier in the week.
‘Having revisited her doctor she has now been advised to rest for a week, which unfortunately means that she is no longer able to perform at V Festival.
‘We wish her a speedy recovery.’
Superstar acts such as Tinie Tempah, David Guetta, The Voice coach Sir Tom Jones, and X Factor judge Tulisa are still set to play.
But all the talk at the two venues so far has been about the weather, which threatened to put a dampener on events yesterday.
Overcast skies and intermittent rain and showers greeted many revellers who pitched up at Weston Park on Friday afternoon, but that’s now given way to some of the hottest temperatures the UK has seen this summer.
Mums everywhere will be hoping their youngsters have packed plenty of sunscreen, with temperatures expected to top 30C in some parts of the country.
The northerly V Festival site won’t see those sort of heights, but the mercury is still set to soar to the mid 20s – although down in Essex, revellers are preparing themselves for temperatures that could reach close to the 30C mark.
Some revellers expressed frustration at Minaj pulling out of the gig at the last minute, while others didn’t seem too bothered.
‘Nicki Minaj pulled out of V fest – gonna be some angry kids,’ said one fan on Twitter.
Another added: ‘Everyone’s selling their v.fest tickets now.’
However, one V Festival attendee didn’t seem too worried by the news, tweeting: ‘Nicki Minaj pulled out of V-Fest due to ‘vocal issues’ – what, she realised she couldn’t sing yeah?’
Other acts set to step up in the R’n’B star’s absence include party rockers LMFAO, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Example, Emeli Sande, and Rizzle Kicks.
