A man has been arrested after firing a starting pistol during a live TV broadcast at the Cannes Film Festival.

Oscar winning actor Christoph Waltz said he ‘feared for his life’ as the shots sent him and fellow actor Daniel Auteuil, plus dozens of audience members, running for cover.

The pair were being interviewed live on French TV station Canal’s nightly news show on the palm-lined waterfront when the man fired two shots and threatened to blow up the studio.

‘I was on a panel at the Studio Canal platform off the beach when a man produced a gun,’ he told the Daily Mail. ‘I think it was a pistol and he fired but luckily for me they were blanks.

‘Then he shouted he had a grenade and again luckily for me there was no grenade.

‘The police have him. They tackled him to the ground. I don’t know who he was or where he came from or what his problem was.’

Bodyguards rushed to get Waltz and Auteuil off stage as members of the press and public ran away in panic.

‘The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground,’ said one witness. ‘The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand.’

Police arrested the man, found to be carrying a dummy grenade and a knife, at the scene before taking him into custody.

‘It really appears to be a crazy guy,’ said a police source.

Waltz, who has won two best supporting actor Oscars for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, and Auteuil, are both serving on the Cannes jury.

It comes just 24 hours after more than $1million worth of Chopard jewellery was stolen from a hotel as the annual film festival on the French Riviera town.
