Javeriya Riaz from Pakistan, who is studying at Linköping University, was awarded today the Academic Search’s annual diversity award for his essay on how Sweden and Swedish companies may be better able to attract and retain talent in a globalized labor market. The prize – a scholarship of SEK 10 000 – handed out in connection with the Diversity Challenge in Stockholm.

– Diversity in the workplace reflects society and provides greater insight into customers. Companies understand that exploit diversity will ensure productivity and the degree of innovation increase. It is about bringing together different perspectives that people have acquired through their ethnic background, age, gender, skills and experience, writes Javeriya Riaz in his essay.

Javeriya Riaz quit right now his Masters in Software Engineering and Management at Linköping University. She has studied in Switzerland and homeland Pakistan. She is also one of 28 people who were selected from a total of 900 candidates in this year’s round of recruitment program Diversity Challenge.

Diversity Challenge is Academic Search’s efforts to increase diversity in the industry by offering people with multicultural backgrounds a network and internships with some of Sweden’s top employers. Participants compete this year for a total of 13 services at TeliaSonera, Waterfall, Alfa Laval, Volvo and Unilever.

– When I started the Diversity Challenge eight years ago was the difficulty for people with foreign backgrounds to enter the labor market in focus. Today, it has more come to focus on business needs and business. Companies are seeking multicultural skills to compete in a global market and a different background can today be an advantage. Javeriya Riaz has shown in his essay examples of Sweden and Swedish companies can work on these issues, says Marika Treschow, founder of Academic Search.
