JAPAN’S new levitating bullet trains have undergone their first test runs. Capable of reaching mind-blowing speeds, they did not disappoint.

The ‘L0 series maglev trains (magnetic levitation)’ are the fastest ever built. Cruising at speeds of up to 500km/h, they can cover approximately 322km in just 40 minutes.

Designed by JR Tokai, the trains don’t have wheels, instead they use an electromagnetic cushion for levitation and propulsion. They’re expected to be comprised of 14 carriages holding 68 people each.

They also feature a streamlined nose similar to its other bullet train counterparts, which reduces wind drag.

The first five trains in the L0 series have undergone initial tests, involving them being pushed along the track by a maintenance car.

Further test runs are scheduled for September on one of Japan’s busiest routes – Tokyo to Nagoya. The official service is expected to start in 2027 and will be expanded to Osaka by 2045.

The prototype was first unveiled last November.

Japan created the first bullet train in 1964.
