How to Reduce Your Anxiety at Work

What is anxiety

Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of nervousness, especially for an upcoming event with an uncertain outcome. Anxiety in a lot of ways can lead to depression, which is a disorder that one is persistently in a depressed mood or has little interest in daily life activities. Because of these circumstances, anxiety can be difficult for one to cope with, and it may hinder a person’s performance at work. Notable instances of dealing with anxiety at work may stem from worry over potentially losing a job or being disrespected by one’s peers. These unfortunate events can cause difficulties in their working life, especially considering that jobs can be challenging to leave. Instances such sexual harassment, which is a frequent issue for women in the work place, may also cause anxiety to the point of diminishing job perfomance, not to mention various other consuqences from emotional trauma. Although stress from poor working-relations contributes much to anxiety, one can also be stressed over a challenging or demanding job position. Regardless of your difficulties at work, unhappiness in the workplace can lead to higher levels of anxiety. The question is: how can we reduce our stress and anxiety levels at work, when there is seemingly little we can do to affect our circumstances?

Don’t stress out about home

Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce anxiety and better focus on your job. It is important to attempt to relax while at work. There are many ways a person can relax. For instance, if you are about being away from your house all day, you can have a doorbell camera installed. This way, if you are worried about a package delivery, or just want to check on things, you can do so from your mobile phone. 

Take care of yourself

Additionally, there are many natural remedies to feel more relaxed such as maintaining a good diet and meditating regularly. Taking care of your physical and mental health can greatly reduce your anxiety at all times, including at work. In regards to good dieting, try eating foods that contain tryptophan, and magnesium. These nutrients can help improve your sleep quality so that you get to work relaxed and in a good mood.  It’s also recommended that you always a satisfying lunch while you’re at work, so you’re better able to stay energized and be productive at work. Fruits and vegetables are excellent snacks to eat at work. As important as watching what you eat is, you should also be careful about what you drink. Experts say that drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee past noon may increase the levels of anxiety. Coffee is extremely popular in the workplace because it increases your energy, but in doing so makes it equally difficult  for us to relax.

Change your working conditions

If you are totally unable to feel relaxed at work, consider bringing up your concerns with your boss. Most organizations value the mental health and happiness of their workforce and will do what they can to improve your working conditions. You might also want to bring up your concerns with the human resource department, if your company has one. They may be able to address your concerns and give you further advice on coping with workplace anxiety. If there’s a scenario where you aren’t able to reduce your stress level, it may be best for you to start looking for other employment opportunities. There may be countless jobs with acceptable working conditions that will satisfy your needs. You might also seek employment from home where you can have total control over your working conditions.
