Erdoğan announces Nov. 1 as date for early poll, accused by CHP of staging coup

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Turkey will go to a snap poll on Nov. 1, also confirming he will not give the mandate to form a government to the leader of the main opposition party despite established democratic practices in the country.

“The date announced [for an early general election] at the moment is Nov. 1. Turkey will, God willing, go through what I like to call a repeat election on Nov. 1,” Erdoğan told reporters on Friday.

Erdoğan’s announcement of the early election date came despite insistent calls by main opposition the Republican People’s Party (CHP) for the president to task, as per democratic usages, its leader with forming a government before calling for an early election.
