A charity in Colombia has ‘rescued’ an eight-month-old boy who weighs more than three stone – thought to be the country’s most obese baby.

Santiago Mendoza, who weighs the same as a six-year-old child, is dangerously overweight and needs urgent medical treatment.

Volunteers from the Chubby Hearts foundation flew the child to the capital of Bogota from his home in the north east city of Valledupar after the boy’s mother wrote to them asking for help.

Eunice Fandino said she was virtually housebound because her son was too big to take out and admitted her own ‘ignorance’ was to blame for his weight gain.

She said: ‘He was born with an anxiety, so if he cried I just fed him.’

The youngster has already been hospitalised on several occasions because of his weight and he is now being assessed by specialists, the Daily Mail reports.

Salvador Palacio Gonzalez, director of the Chubby Hearts foundation, said doctors will attempt to reduce his weight before carrying out a number of operations.

Santiago’s mother has promised to follow medics’ instructions and says she ‘optimistic’ about the help being offered to her son.
