Diego Costa may have been frustrated by Sunderland’s defence at the Stadium of Light, but it’s not been a bad 18 months for the striker.

Costa helped Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title last season, as well as the Champions League final, before joining Chelsea in the summer, where he has enjoyed a flying start.

And it’s been such an impressive time of his career, the goalscoring stats show Costa has actually been as good as Lionel Messi in that period.

While current Ballon d’Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead in the goalscoring charts with 51 strikes since the start of the 2013/14 season, Costa and Messi are level-pegging in second place with 38 goals apiece.

So if the reports of Chelsea’s interest in signing Messi prove to be false as Jose Mourinho suggests, it may not be the end of the world for the Blues… see more
