Australian sprinter Daniel Batman killed in car crash near Darwin

AUSTRALIAN athlete Daniel Batman has been killed in a car crash southeast of Darwin.

Northern Territory police said his car rolled near the Adelaide River bridge on Arnhem Highway.

The crash was noticed by a passing motorist about 7am today.

Police said excessive speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors to the crash.

Batman competed in the Sydney Olympics and was the Australian men’s 200m champion in 2005 and 2008.

He competed in the 100m, 200m and 400m events with his best achievement a sixth place in the 400m at the world indoor championships in Birmingham in 2003.

He had a daughter with former Australian representative athlete and hockey player Nova Peris-Kneebone.

Batman, who attended Scots College and Cranbrook School in Sydney, was a direct descendant of Melbourne’s founder, John Batman.
